DENTAL FILLINGS
Fillings are a common way to repair teeth that are damaged by decay. Tooth decay is a progressive condition. The process may start with enamel erosion or damage to the outermost layer of the tooth. Without treatment, this destructive process marches its way through the rest of the tooth. And, while enamel erosion can be resolved with oral care products and hygiene modifications (such as fluoride supplements to remineralize the teeth), deeper or more extensive decay requires restorative care.
Fillings are a type of dental restoration. Restorations are generally tooth-like materials that have been prepared and shaped to replace deteriorated or lost structures. Fillings quite literally “fill in” the cavities or holes in the teeth that form as decay marches its destructive path through a tooth.
Today’s dental professionals have many materials to choose from, in partnership with patients, when planning fillings treatment. Fillings may be made from non-metals, such as porcelain and composite resin. They may also be fabricated with metals like gold or amalgam. Dental amalgams are often called “silver fillings” because of their color. However, these materials are primarily made of mercury, as well as tin, zinc, copper, and silver.
The type of filling that is appropriate for you depends on many factors, such as the location and function of the tooth to be treated, and if the patient has concerns or a history of sensitivities to metals. Additionally, we will not know the best option for restorative treatment until after we examine your troublesome tooth! Some larger fillings, for instance, are better suited to restorations that provide more coverage. These restorations include inlays, onlays, and full dental crowns.
